THE OSGODBY SEADOG (CHRIS ACKLAM 25.05.82 -08.05.01)
It is with great sadness that we have to announce to visitors to the Theatre of Chips website, that the Webmaster, Chris Acklam, died on Tuesday, 8th May, 2001 aged 18 years. Chris had fought a 20 month battle against testicular cancer which had unfortunately spread to other parts of his body and meant that he had to endure neurosurgery twice to remove tumours from his brain, radiotherapy and 10 months in all of aggressive chemotherapy. Despite all this, Chris fought his battle to the bitter end and was always confident that he was going to win. In the end the cancer won we discovered only days before he died that yet another brain tumour had developed and that no further treatment was available.
Chris was a Season Ticket Holder and a true and loyal supporter of Scarborough Football Club and had been for a number of years. He was a wonderful and loving son and brother and we are devastated at his death and will miss him tremendously.
We are deeply touched by all the messages of condolence from Seadogs everywhere and to those of you kind enough to enquire, we would like to ask that any donations be sent to The Chris Acklam Cancer Charities Fund c/o North Yorkshire Law, Albemarle Chambers, Scarborough YO11 1LA. This was a fund that we set up just before Chris died as he was keen to raise money for the various hospitals and organisations who had treated and helped him and his family. These include hospitals in Hull, Leeds and Sheffield and the Macmillan Nurses.
Finally and perhaps most importantly, to all you men out there particularly the young. Your messages show that you obviously held Chris in high regard please dont let his death be in vain. It is too late for Chris, we cannot turn the clock back but I would hope that by learning of what has happened to Chris that you all take note and spread the word in the hope that even just one person and his family can avoid the anguish that Chris and ourselves have had to go through.
All the information about Testicular Cancer highlights the fact that it is one of the most curable cancers with a 90% cure rate and it is IF IT IS DISCOVERED AND TREATED EARLY. Unfortunately this did not happen with Chris and his illness was quite advanced when it was discovered and this was to prove a problem time after time. We would like to express our deepest thanks to all those who have cared for Chris and did their best to help to save his life.
