Complete playing record

As of start of  1999/00 season

Jonathan arrived at Deepdale along with two other Manchester United youngsters, Michael Appleton and Colin Murdock, in the summer of 1997, and is another player still with something to prove. His style of play is very similar to that of his hero Mark Hughes, but goalscoring remains something of a problem for him. His control and technique are often excellent, but when in front of goal seems to suffer from a lack of confidence.
Macken was a member of England's under-20 World Cup squad, and was a prolific scorer for Manchester United's youth team, which made it a surprise when Alex Ferguson agreed to release him.
Opinion is divided amongst the fans regarding Jonathan's true ability, but it must be remembered that at 21 years of age he has his best days in front of him and will undoubtedly get better given a long run in the side. However, that is not really a risk we can afford to take at the moment, and he is likely to start next season on the bench.
